GUARD YOUR HEART
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? {Jerimiah 17:19}
Above all else, guard your heart with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life {Proverbs 4:23}
This means that we need to be vigilant and alert about the battles of our hearth.
This is very important because from our hearth, our destiny is formed; our desires, passions, motivations, family, business, friendships, actions, investment and everything that has to do with us.
One of the keys to success in life is to be able to guard your heart. |
Why do you need to guard your Heart?
1. Heart is extremely valuable: We don’t guard worthless things. I can afford put your waste bin outside your house and the sun and rain beat it; Why?
Because it is worthless. The heart is not so. It is the essence of who you are. It is your authentic self, the core of your being. It is where all your dreams, your desires, and your passions live. It is that part of you that connects with God and other people.Just like your physical body, if your heart the spiritual heart dies, then the destiny dies.
2. The heart is the source of everything you do. King Solomon says it is the “wellspring of life.” In other words, it is the source of everything else in your life. Your heart overflows into thoughts, words, and actions.
If there is a spring and the source of the flow is polluted then that life will be polluted.
Just like if your heart is unhealthy; it has an impact on everything else. It threatens your family, your friends, your ministry, your career, and, indeed, your legacy. It is, therefore, imperative that you guard it.
3. Heart is under constant attack. When Solomon says to guard your heart, he implies that you are living in a combat zone. One in which there are casualties. Many of us are oblivious to the reality of this war. We have an enemy who is bent on our destruction. He not only opposes God, but he opposes everything that is aligned with Him; including us.
How do you Guard your Heart?
· Study word of God. If you want to know how to guard your heart from things that will pull you away from God, the Bible is the best place to start. It is full of advice for living wisely. (Proverbs 4:20-22)
· Discipline. Being disciplined about what we think about and what we say (Proverbs 4:24).
· Spend time in prayer. Guarding your heart means having a healthy
relationship with God. That relationship grows as you pray and have conversations with Him.· Choose friends wisely. Choosing good friends seems easy, but sometimes we lose sight of friends who are good for us and the ones that seem more fun or flashy.
Make sure there is substance in your relationships. · Get good advice. When we're stuck in a situation, turn to a spiritual leader that you respect for being strong in his/her faith.
· Walking in a straight line: There is an obvious implication here about the choices we make in where we go, and in what we spend our time. (Proverbs 4:26-27)
· Learn to overcome temptation. We are surrounded by temptation after temptation in our daily lives. Find ways to avoid them or learn how to walk away from bad situations.
· Learn to overcome doubt. Doubt can creep in slowly. We hear anti-Christian messages every day. Learn to push doubt aside and strengthen your faith.
