DAVID AND GOLIATH'S SWORD

31ST , MARCH 2022

EXTRA READING FOR TODAY: 1 Samuel 18-19

READ:1 Samuel 21:1-9
1 Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

2 And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

3 Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.

4 And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

5 And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.

6 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.

8 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.

9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

EXPOSITION

David had no sword, spear, or javelin when he killed Goliath. He mocked Goliath's reliance on his military expertise as he approached the giant in the name of Yahweh and just a catapult with 5 smooth stones (1 Sam. 17:45). He killed Goliath and cut off his head with his own sword. What did he do with the sword? Obviously, he dedicated the trophy to the Lord by putting the sword in God's tent and not in his own house. What a thoughtful and grateful man!

David's action here negates that of Hezekiah who chose to flaunt his military and political prowess before the Babylonian envoys, instead of showing them the power of Yahweh who had healed him miraculously (2 Kgs. 20:12,13). After the Lord gives you victory in any form, what do you do with the 'sword' of the victory? Displaying it at home or in your office, or dedicating it to the Lord? The glory must go to the Captain of your salvation.

The defeat of Goliath (1 Sam. 17) resulted in Saul bitterly and murderously envying the young David, because of the women's songs of praise, thus resulting in David fleeing from Saul. As he ran away, he got to Nob and asked for bread and sword from Priest Ahimelech. There wasn't any sword in the Lord's tent (a tent of peace; not of battle), but for the dedicated one.

In his time of trial, David asked for the dedicated Goliath's sword! The sword that did not save its owner from his hand, he said of it, 'There is none like it; give it to me'. David who had asserted his non-reliance on his weapons (Psa. 44:3,5) remembered Goliath's sword in his moment of trial! This decision would cost the lives of the priests, and David himself would later regret it (1 Sam. 22:17-19,22). Don't let the devil push you back into trusting in the arms of the flesh.

PRAYER POINT:

    1. Praise the name of the Lord who has led you from victory to victory.

    2. Pray against the spirit that tries to share God's glory with Him and trusts the arms of flesh.

    3. Pray for new converts in our churches that they would receive the grace not to look back/away from their confession and commitment to Christ.

DO HAVE A BLESSED DAY
